Golf Swing Speed Hack for Intermediate Golfers

Many of us who golf regularly still want to see specific improvements in our game. It is like any type of pursuit – if you want to get better at golf you need to put in the practice time. The number one reason that golfers are going to be dissatisfied with their game is going to because of fundamental irregularities in their swing. It’s a component of what you do every time you touch the ball, with the exception being the different mechanics that go into putting. Many of us here who golf regularly in Palm Desert aren’t so pleased with our swings either.

These days the term that’s ubiquitous for a quick, easy and suitably ingenious fix for something is to call it a hack. Around these parts our expertise is operating the best public golf course in Coachella Valley, and we don’t have any hacks for that. What we do have are expert golf pros on staff who offer golf lessons if you slice the ball as reliably as the sun coming up in the East each morning. And speaking of sunrises, you can often pay less at our Palm Desert golf club for early morning spots when you book a tee time online.

That might be best if there’s fewer people around if you’re bound to be slicing it hard off the tee with your drive. So how about we see to it that doesn’t happen anymore, or at least a whole lot less often. There is this one specific golf swing hack that you can try, and apparently it has picked up a lot of traction online. People are saying that you really need to try it the next time you’re at a golf course in Palm Desert and on the practice range working on your fundamentals.

Emphasis on Counter Movement

No one needs to be told that when they are swinging a golf club it is all about a transfer of energy. When you watch a golf swing in slow-mo you’ll see that’s what you are doing – even if you are doing it incorrectly. Going through your golf swing in slow-motion can actually strongly reinforce the correct movement and energy transfer, but that’s provided you are doing it correctly to begin with. Which is essential, and whether you’re on a Palm Desert public golf course of ready to tee off on One at Augusta National.

The golf swing hack we’re going to share with you here has everything to do with emphasizing counter-weight movement, and specifically with pushing your weigh into your lead side. Most golfers are right handed, so we’ll explain it from that perspective. The exact opposite will apply for a left-handed golfer.

Here’s what we’ll have you do, and you can try it anywhere with a club in your hands and if you’re hitting a ball or not:

  • Stand as you would normally in your stance if you were preparing to swing through the ball
  • Lift your left foot deliberately off the ground anywhere from 6 to 10 inches depending on what is comfortable and feels normal for you. The raise will be shorter for people who are not as tall, and you get the idea.
  • Now plant it and without delay raise your right (outside and lean leg) foot to the same height as you begin your swing. Have it come down and to a full rest just as you finish the apex of your swing.
  • Your full downward body weight should be moving from the back to the front foot, and as this movement and weight shift becomes more natural it will be in sync with the swing and result in greater energy transfer because of the more optimized weight shift.

It may take a while for this to work as intended and before you become aware of the weight transfer resulting in more energy in your swing. And then of course you will need to internalize the movement and shift. So that you are not bringing your feet into the air when you’re actually in the tee box, or anywhere between there and the green.

The one important point to focus on as you practice this in advance of your next round of golf in Palm Desert is to ensure you hips stay closed through the swing and only open slightly as you complete the arc of it and the ball is in the process of the club face. Not a moment earlier, or your improved golf swing energy transfer will be applied to ball that is unlikely to be coming off the club straight.

Some players who try this practice technique for golf will do with the club only in their right hand to ensure the hips stay as they should while the up and back / down to front energy transfer is underway. That may be a better idea if you’re a newer golfer and your swing is still a work in progress.

Think of how a tennis player does the same thing with their serve. The way they have their weight on their back foot for just a nano-second before shifting it forward fast their arm being the conduit for the energy created as it moves into the racquet and then is channeled into the ball on contact.
